alternator

Does Your Lincoln Need an Alternator Repair?

The alternator is the most important part of your car's electrical charging system. It generates the power to recharge your battery and supply all your car's devices and components. Age or damage can cause problems for the alternator, and you'll need to visit us for an alternator repair. As your Lincoln dealer, we'd like to tell you about some signs that your alternator needs to be fixed. Blown Alternator Fuse All of the electrical systems in your car have fuses. Electrical spikes and other electrical disturbances can damage a component, and the fuses are designed to blow out if a problem occurs. Once the fuse blows, it will cut off the electrical connection to the component to protect it. If the alternator fuse blows, the alternator will be protected, but your car will immediately lose all its power generation. A lack of power from the alternator will force the battery to take over and supply your car's power. A car's battery has a limited electrical storage capacity, and it's not designed to supply all of your car's power. The battery will quickly drain, and your car will stop. Our technicians will replace the alternator fuse, and your alternator will work normally again. Damaged Wiring Electrical wiring runs through your car and transports the power generated by your alternator. The wiring is delicate, and it has thick plastic and rubber coverings to protect it. This protection is necessary, as a car's engine is a harsh environment for wiring. We routinely inspect the condition of all your car's wiring during your routine services. If a wire breaks, it will cut off the power to the component it's connected to. Your car's computer will note the component has failed due to a lack of electricity, and the alternator will send more power to that component. As more electricity flows down a broken wire, it will heat up and start to burn. The burning wire can set the plastic and rubber insulation alight and potentially cause an engine fire. Check Battery Light This light will come on if a problem is detected in your electrical charging system. Sensors in your car's electrical system constantly update your car's computer on the status of their attached components. If there's a problem with a component, its sensor will send the information to the computer, and the light will come on. The problem also generates an error code that your computer will log it. Our technicians will connect your computer to our diagnostic system to find the cause of the problem. Once we know the cause of the problem, we'll repair it. An alternator will always give signs that something is wrong. Call us at Bob Maxey Lincoln.

brake service

Signs You Need a Brake Repair at Your Lincoln Dealer

Brakes are vital for keeping you safe. Over time, parts in the braking system will wear out or get damaged, and you'll need a brake repair. If this happens, your Lincoln dealer can fix the problem for you. These are a few signs that your brakes need to be checked. Soft Brake Pedal When you step on the brake pedal, you should always feel resistance. The resistance is caused by pressurized brake fluid in the system. This brake fluid provides the hydraulic power that enables your braking system to work. If you encounter no resistance from the pedal, this is a sign of a braking problem. The lack of response could be caused by a brake fluid leak. If your Lincoln is losing fluid, the pressure in the system will drop, and brakes will become more difficult to operate. This problem could also be caused by a failure of the brake master cylinder, a blockage in the brake fluid reservoir, or an obstruction in the brake hoses. Our technicians will check your system and fix the problem. Hard Brake Pedal A hard brake pedal is the opposite of the problem above. In this case, the brake pedal provides too much resistance. When you step on a hard brake pedal, it will barely move. The cause of this problem is the failure of the brake power booster. The brake power booster provides additional power that allows your brake pedal to move. The brake booster operates using a vacuum system powered by your engine. When you switch on the engine, the booster provides 10x normal human strength to allow you to easily use the brake pedal. If the vacuum system develops a leak, it won't work, and your brake pedal will become very difficult to move. Car Turns to One Side It's scary if your car pulls to one side when you brake, as it feels like you're losing control of your car. The pulling towards one side is a sign of brake trouble. This problem is caused by the brakes activating on only one side of your car. Your car will automatically pull towards the side with a working brake. This problem can be caused by a jammed or damaged caliper that doesn't close on the wheel rotor. Each of your wheel rotors has a caliper attached above it, which grabs the rotor when you hit the brakes. Friction between the brake pad in the caliper and the wheel rotor will stop your car. Another possible problem is a blockage in the brake hose on the affected side of your car. If you have any brake problems, call us ASAP at Bob Maxey Lincoln. Image by Ralph from Pixabay

auto mechanic

3 Benefits of Working With a Trained Lincoln Mechanic

When you need any repair to your Lincoln, it's important to make the right choice on who repairs your car. You want to have the highest quality repair possible. Your Lincoln deserves the best, and that means you need repairs by a trained Lincoln mechanic. As your Lincoln dealership in Detroit, MI, we'd like to tell you about some of the benefits our mechanics provide. Lincoln Expertise Our technicians are Lincoln-certified and trained. Once they have completed their initial mechanical training, they enter advanced training in the Lincoln range of vehicles. Although all automobiles have a similar operating procedure, there are numerous differences between makes and models. To ensure you have the best possible service, your Lincoln deserves the attention of technicians who are experts in your vehicle. Regular mechanics are trained to fix a wide variety of makes and models. They don't, however, specialize in any particular type of vehicle. This general approach means they can perform an adequate job. A regular mechanic, however, lacks the specialist knowledge our technicians have, and this can potentially result in mistakes. Best Technology Our technicians have access to the best available technology to assist with any repairs. Our diagnostic system, for example, is attuned to Lincoln models and can provide the best and most accurate diagnosis. All of our specialist machinery is geared towards the Lincoln range, and it's regularly updated. The best technology for your car is the technology that was designed to work with your car. A regular repair shop won't have the specialist equipment that we have. Since regular mechanics work with numerous makes and models, they have technology designed to work with many different vehicles. Their diagnostic system won't be able to provide the comprehensive information that is needed to provide you with the highest quality repairs. Genuine Parts As a Lincoln dealer, our technicians only use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts from Lincoln. These parts are the best available, and they are specifically designed to fit your car. They have a known and recognized standard, and are backed by the worldwide reputation of the Lincoln brand. OEM parts will always fit correctly and will work perfectly with your vehicle. An ordinary repair shop will offer you generic parts rather than OEM ones. It's cheaper for a repair shop to order generic parts, but these parts do have possible problems. Generic parts aren't specifically designed for your car. They're designed to fit a wide range of different cars. The lack of specialist parts can complicate a repair. It's also possible that generic parts may not fit correctly. As a proud Lincoln owner, you want to keep your car in great condition so you can enjoy its power and elegance. To maintain your Lincoln, any repair needs to meet the highest possible standard. All of our work meets the high standards set by Lincoln. If you need any repairs, call our service department ASAP at Bob Maxey Lincoln. Image by Ralphs_Fotos from Pixabay

Lincoln Radiator

Does Your Lincoln Need a Radiator Repair?

The powerful engine in your Lincoln generates a great deal of heat. Without an effective cooling system, your engine will quickly get too hot and break down. The radiator serves the vital function of cooling the system's coolant fluid, so it needs to be kept in tip-top shape. If you notice any of the following 4 signs of radiator trouble, it might be time to visit your local Lincoln dealer for radiator repair. Climbing Temperature Gauge Every Lincoln has a temperature gauge on the dashboard. The dial in this gauge should usually always be hovering around midway between too hot and too cold. If you notice it begins to creep higher, then there's almost certainly something wrong with your cooling system. This might be as simple as low levels of coolant, but it might also be some fault with your radiator. Rusting Radiator Your radiator is highly susceptible to rust over time because it's made of metal. In fact, any prolonged exposure to moisture will inevitably cause some rusting. This occurs more often in damp and cold climates. If your car is left unused and outdoors for long periods, moisture will often begin to get in, and without the engine heating up regularly to steam the moisture away, rust will rear its ugly head. Rusting might also be caused by liquid leaking from the radiator itself, or from the radiator hose. Any build-up of rust can eventually impede the radiator's effectiveness. It can also be an indicator of some other problem. So it shouldn't be ignored. Leaking Coolant Fluid If you notice any brightly-colored, sweet-smelling liquid pooling under your car, it's most likely a coolant leak. This leak could be from a crack or faulty connection in your radiator or hose. Any such leak needs to be found and fixed as quickly as possible before fluid levels drop too low and your engine begins to overheat, which is when really significant damage begins. Maintaining Proper Coolant Levels Careful Lincoln maintenance requires regularly checking all of your fluid levels. Make sure this includes checking your coolant fluid. You can do this by waiting until the engine has cooled down, then you find the coolant reservoir in your engine bay. On the side of this semi-transparent plastic container, you'll see a mark for "min" and "max" fluid levels, and the liquid level inside will be visible. If it's ever surprisingly low, get it topped up pronto. Overheating Engine The clearest sign of radiator trouble is white steam pouring from your hood while driving, indicating the engine is overheating. If you see this, pull over immediately and allow the engine to cool. A technician will need to identify and fix the problem. If you keep driving with a non-functioning cooling system, pistons could begin to melt inside and fuse with the combustion chambers, destroying the entire engine. How Your Lincoln Dealer Checks Your Radiator A good mechanic will check your coolant levels, and examine your radiator and your entire cooling system for any sign of leaks, rust, corrosion, or cracks. They'll run a pressure test on your radiator cap, and they'll also test your thermostat and fan. If you'd like certified professionals to check your radiator, visit Bob Maxey Lincoln, a trusted local dealership where we take as much pride in our customer service as we do in our vehicles. oil change engine

How Often Should You Get Your Lincoln Oil Change?

Of all the regular servicing your car requires at your local Lincoln dealer, nothing's more important than changing your motor oil. Car engines run smoothly because of the oil that lubricates all the moving parts, reducing the friction which would otherwise rapidly overheat and destroy your engine. With use, this motor oil steadily wears down, collecting dirt and losing its lubricating qualities. So regular Lincoln oil changes are essential for every Lincoln driver. Less Frequently for Synthetic Oil Most modern Lincolns take synthetic oil, which should be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. This will usually be every six to twelve months. If you're still using conventional oil, however, you should have it changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, which might be every three to six months. The reason synthetic oil lasts so much longer is because it doesn't thicken into sludge as quickly when exposed to extreme heat. Pay Heed to Your Oil-Life Monitor These days, many modern Lincoln models come with a very sophisticated Oil-Life Monitor displayed on the dashboard. This monitor calculates the lifespan of your oil and warns you when it needs a change with a message reading "Change Engine Oil Soon" or "Oil Change Required." It also shows you a percentage indicator estimating your oil's remaining lifespan. This Oil-Life Monitor uses algorithms to calculate how rapidly your oil is wearing down. It's remarkably sophisticated, taking into account all kinds of variables that affect the lifespan of your oil. These variables include your driving habits, terrain, and climate. Conditions Requiring More Frequent Oil Changes The more strain your engine is put under, the quicker your oil will wear down and the more frequently you'll need to have it changed. More severe driving conditions and styles include extremely hot or cold climates, driving with heavy loads or heavy towing, off-road driving, mountainous driving, frequent short-range trips, and extended engine idling. Ask at Your Local Lincoln Dealer You might be unsure as to how ordinary or severe your personal driving conditions are, in which case it can't hurt to ask the professionals. Technicians at your local dealership will be happy to provide advice and guidance on your driving terrain and style and how often you should have an oil change. They'll also let you know what type of oil is best suited to your vehicle if you're not sure of that either. Check Your Warranty and Owner's Manual Your vehicle warranty will almost certainly stipulate a certain frequency of oil change in order to keep the warranty valid. It's best to check what this recommended interval is for your Lincoln and then stick to that schedule. You'll also find matching guidance in your owner's manual inside the Scheduled Maintenance section. Have your oil checked and changed today by experienced Lincoln technicians at Bob Maxey Lincoln. We're a trusted local dealership that's been providing luxury vehicles and equally luxurious customer service to the region's drivers since 1972.
