You might have noticed a drop in your Lincoln's ordinarily flawless engine function and handling. Perhaps this was accompanied by an unpleasant sulfury smell and a rattling sound from below. These odd phenomena could be signs of a faulty catalytic converter. Let's look in detail at three indications that your cat is in trouble, so you know when to visit your Lincoln dealer to have it fixed or replaced. more Your Engine's Clearly Struggling A malfunctioning converter starts to inhibit the exit of air and fumes from your exhaust system. This backs up the flow of air throughout the engine, which means the combustion chambers aren't getting enough fresh oxygen. As a result, you'll experience a variety of engine problems. Reduced Acceleration When you press on the gas pedal, you might notice you're not speeding up anywhere near as quickly as you should be. If this happens, you'll see thick black smoke in your rearview mirror. You Can Smell Rotten Eggs One of the toxic emissions a healthy cat cleans up is hydrogen sulfide. This particular gas has an awful sulfury smell, rather like that of rotten eggs. If you can smell eggs in your cabin, roll down all the windows and drive your car straight to a dealership. Hydrogen sulfide is a very dangerous gas to breathe. You Hear Metallic Rattling From Below A damaged cat often causes a loud rattling sound. If the converter is jolted loose in its brackets, it will shake around, making a noise. This problem can often be fixed quite easily by screwing and welding the brackets back into place. But if the internal mesh workings of the cat have been broken by a jolt or denting blow, then you'll probably need a new converter. Water Marks When the outlet pipe from the AC system becomes blocked, it can result in leaks in your car, putting your upholstery at risk. The alternator is the most important part of your car's electrical charging system. It generates the power to recharge your battery and supply all your car's devices and components. Age or damage can cause problems for the alternator, and you'll need to visit us for an alternator repair. As your Lincoln dealer, we'd like to tell you about some signs that your alternator needs to be fixed. more Blown Alternator Fuse All of the electrical systems in your car have fuses. Electrical spikes and other electrical disturbances can damage a component, and the fuses are designed to blow out if a problem occurs. Once the fuse blows, it will cut off the electrical connection to the component to protect it. If the alternator fuse blows, the alternator will be protected, but your car will immediately lose all its power generation. A lack of power from the alternator will force the battery to take over and supply your car's power. A car's battery has a limited electrical storage capacity, and it's not designed to supply all of your car's power. The battery will quickly drain, and your car will stop. Our technicians will replace the alternator fuse, and your alternator will work normally again. Damaged Wiring Electrical wiring runs through your car and transports the power generated by your alternator. The wiring is delicate, and it has thick plastic and rubber coverings to protect it. This protection is necessary, as a car's engine is a harsh environment for wiring. We routinely inspect the condition of all your car's wiring during your routine services. If a wire breaks, it will cut off the power to the component it's connected to. Your car's computer will note the component has failed due to a lack of electricity, and the alternator will send more power to that component. As more electricity flows down a broken wire, it will heat up and start to burn. The burning wire can set the plastic and rubber insulation alight and potentially cause an engine fire. Check Battery Light This light will come on if a problem is detected in your electrical charging system. Sensors in your car's electrical system constantly update your car's computer on the status of their attached components. If there's a problem with a component, its sensor will send the information to the computer, and the light will come on. The problem also generates an error code that your computer will log it. Our technicians will connect your computer to our diagnostic system to find the cause of the problem. Once we know the cause of the problem, we'll repair it. Brakes are vital for keeping you safe. Over time, parts in the braking system will wear out or get damaged, and you'll need a brake repair. If this happens, your Lincoln dealer can fix the problem for you. These are a few signs that your brakes need to be checked. more Soft Brake Pedal When you step on the brake pedal, you should always feel resistance. The resistance is caused by pressurized brake fluid in the system. This brake fluid provides the hydraulic power that enables your braking system to work. If you encounter no resistance from the pedal, this is a sign of a braking problem. The lack of response could be caused by a brake fluid leak. If your Lincoln is losing fluid, the pressure in the system will drop, and brakes will become more difficult to operate. This problem could also be caused by a failure of the brake master cylinder, a blockage in the brake fluid reservoir, or an obstruction in the brake hoses. Our technicians will check your system and fix the problem. Hard Brake Pedal A hard brake pedal is the opposite of the problem above. In this case, the brake pedal provides too much resistance. When you step on a hard brake pedal, it will barely move. The cause of this problem is the failure of the brake power booster. The brake power booster provides additional power that allows your brake pedal to move. The brake booster operates using a vacuum system powered by your engine. When you switch on the engine, the booster provides 10x normal human strength to allow you to easily use the brake pedal. If the vacuum system develops a leak, it won't work, and your brake pedal will become very difficult to move. Car Turns to One Side It's scary if your car pulls to one side when you brake, as it feels like you're losing control of your car. The pulling towards one side is a sign of brake trouble. This problem is caused by the brakes activating on only one side of your car. Your car will automatically pull towards the side with a working brake. This problem can be caused by a jammed or damaged caliper that doesn't close on the wheel rotor. Each of your wheel rotors has a caliper attached above it, which grabs the rotor when you hit the brakes. Friction between the brake pad in the caliper and the wheel rotor will stop your car.
