Whether you want to stay comfortable on a long hot drive or demist your windscreen on a freezing winter’s morning, you rely on your car’s aircon system to make your driving experience better without any fuss. If you’re alert to the symptoms of your car AC not working, you can quickly contact your Lincoln dealership to resolve any problems.

Weak Airflow

One sign of a malfunctioning AC is when the airflow from the vents feels weak. To test your aircon, turn it on so that the vents are blowing fresh rather than recirculated air, and to the highest fan speed and coldest setting. If this only produces a lackluster breeze, then your system will require maintenance. It might have broken fans, poor seals, or a blockage.

Warm Air

You need your AC system to blow cool, dry air into the cabin, so it’s no good if the air is warm or room temperature, or quickly becomes warm after initially blowing cold. It might be a simple case of topping up the refrigerant, but you may also have a problem with the compressor or electrics.

Compressors can go bad as a result of long periods of underuse. As winter approaches, be sure to run the air conditioning on full blast for fifteen minutes at least once every three weeks.

Horrible Smells

Nothing undermines the pleasure of an icy blast from the AC on a muggy day faster than an awful odor, but one sign of a malfunctioning aircon unit is a smelly car. Stay alert to aircon problems by keeping your nose open for the following smells:

  • Musty, stale air
  • Mold and mildew
  • A sweetish chemical scent

Whether it’s caused by a refrigerant leak or the buildup of mold in the system, bad smells from your AC won’t go away without professional attention. And they’re bad for your respiratory health in the long term too, so it’s extra important to get them checked out.

Strange Noises

If the AC unit is suffering from wear and tear, or loose debris in the system, it may make odd noises when you switch it on. If you detect a whining, whirring, or rattling sound, it may be at risk of further damage.

Water Marks

When the outlet pipe from the AC system becomes blocked, it can result in leaks in your car, putting your upholstery at risk. This typically pools in the footwell on the passenger side, so check for water marks and damp on the cabin floor. You might even be able to see water dripping from the dashboard.
